After a quiet few days in the tropics, the hurricane center has detected a tropical disturbance Wednesday morning over the Yucatan Peninsula and the eastern Bay of Campeche, according to the National Hurricane Center’s 8 a.m. update.

A tropical wave associated with disorganized showers and thunderstorms had its chances of becoming a tropical depression over the next five days increase to 30 percent since the 2 a.m. update, said NHC hurricane specialist Eric Blake.

The wave is moving west with a northern bend and should bring gale force winds to the Gulf of Mexico by late Thursday, Blake said.
