17-year-old Lake Mary High School student died by suicide at the school early Wednesday, prompting a brief lockdown of the campus, Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma confirmed during a press conference.
Lemma said the student, an 11th grader, died from a single gunshot in an isolated area in the school’s auditorium building just before 8 a.m. School resource deputies responded in “less than a minute” with a school nurse but were unable to save the girl, the sheriff said.
Lemma called what happened a “tragedy” and stressed there was no current threat to anyone at Lake Mary High or other schools. The girl’s name has not yet been released by authorities, but the sheriff said investigators were in contact with her family.
Grief counselors have been dispatched to the school. Lemma urged anyone who knows someone who’s struggling to seek help.
